  50. They aren't CUTTING support. They're taking advantage of the improved 
  51. hardware on 3.x versions. There is no way they could have got pmode 
  52. mega-em to work on 2.x versions.

  55. features, thus releasing programs that won't run on 2.x or 3.x GUS.

  60. No, that's the point. You won't get killed. It is impossible to kill 
  61. someone by having a signature too long, or reposting a whole digest.

  74. Mega-Em is the most advanced piece of emulation software I've ever seen,

  93. I saw that people are having trouble using a SB and a GUS together in the same 
  94. configuration. I've been using the GUS and a SB-Pro for about 2 years, and hav 
  95. had no problems - ever. The wisest thing is to have the SB on its default 
  96. settings. Be sure u have an clear overview of what adresses, interrupts and 
  97. dma's are beeing used by which devices, and no which ones are free. (use 
  98. various system-information programs, check your bios, card manuals.. whatever 
  99. to minmize the chance of conflicts) If you do, you should find appropriate 
  100. settings for the GUS i.e 240,7,7,11,5 - or just go by trial end error until 
  101. you find working settings. I think some network and many other cards like to 
  102. use 230... so personally I think 240 is a good choice.

  104. My settings are SB 220h irq7 d1 (default for sbpro1) and GUS 240,7,7,11,2 and 
  105. never had a problem. The only problem I have is that my SB is getting of no 
  106. use. In the last year, I havent used my SB once.. oh I'm lying, except for 
  107. Magic Carpet.., but I'm planning on selling it because I've run out of empty 
  108. slots. *sigh*

  110. Oh.. well, I guess it really doesn't help by my saying "I GOT IT WORKING!", if 
  111. you don't. All I tried to say is - KNOW YOUR SYSTEM. Make a list of which what 
  112. is free or not. Then u should be able to debug your problem. I dont know, but 
  113. it might be magic, most ppl that I know (with multo soundcards) got it working 
  114. best with the GUS on addr. 240.

  177. setup is very nice, and has only failed on Privateer. The game will not detect

  229. Playing is easy in Windows--use MPlayer.  Recording is a different question...

  234. The only solution I have found is to record the sound in a program such as
  235. GoldWave or Cool Edit (both shareware), and save the file as an ADPCM WAV.
  236. Unfortunately, neither of these two programs will record direct-to-disk as
  237. an ADPCM file.  The resulting WAV file is playable by MPlayer, but I don't
  238. think USS recognizes it.

  243. Sorry, never tried it.  In theory I guess it's possible.  I have seen a few
  244. new programs around that turn the GUS into 4-track recorder (I think that's
  245. what they did--check the submit directory on epas).  I assume you are asking
  246. because you want a method to convert your existing files to ADPCM.  In that
  247. case, a program such as GoldWave or Cool Edit will work.
  248.  
  249. I wrote to the Gravis techs about ADPCM a few months ago, and the response was
  250. a terse message to the effect that the GUS hardware is capable of playing
  251. ADPCM samples, but the Windows drivers do not implement these capabilities.
  252. I am unsure of the wording of his reply, but he made it sound like the GUS had
  253. some kind of hardware features relating to ADPCM recording and playback that
  254. were not being exploited in the GUS Windows drivers (can someone who knows
  255. about the technical stuff verify this?).
  256.  
  257. As to the incompatibility of ADPCM WAV files written by USS, perhaps someone
  258. can get a hex viewer and check out the header and some sample data and
  259. find out whether there is an easy way to fix them to work with Windows.
  260. (Wishful thinking?  I really don't know enough about this kind of thing to
  261. know)

  263. In any case, I have no problem playing ADPCM files written by Cool Edit or
  264. GoldWave (this is NOT an advertisement--just fact!).  If anyone has a better
  265. solution, please advise!

  267. In the meantime, you might want to try mu-law encoding (halves the size, the
  268. same coding used in AU files).  There's a program called WPLANY that can play
  269. these, and one called WHAM that can write them.  Probably not what you're
  270. looking for, but check it out.

  284. been around for quite a while (i.e. it's outdated, but so is a SB!).  Look for
  285. sbgusfaq.txt or something, at the same subdir where the FAQ is.

  287. Re Windows 3.1 GUS driver: Considering what little I know about Windows, I
  288. don't think it's even possible to have such a thing as a 16-bit VxD.  Besides,
  289. the .386 extension shoulda
  290. tipped you off.  What I do suspect is that the driver does some nasty footwork
  291. to trap MIDI calls or load patches or something, and Chicago doesn't like it.
  292. Good thing it can be fooled.

  295. helpful netiquette advice - it doesn't discipline the newbies and usually ends

  354. I need to find a Gravis Ultrasound card for my PC, revision 3.4 or higher.  I
  355. would prefer a card that already has the full 1 meg of memory, but I can get
  356. that separately if need be.  For a fully loaded card, I'd be willing to pay
  357. around $100, plus or minus shipping depending on the arrangements we make.
  358. Please respond quickly, as I'm starting to look more and more at the mail order
  359. catalogs.  I know someone out there must want to unload their GUS on me for a

  406. First of all I'd like to thank everybody for the reply's. Even though all of
  407. them said the same thing ;).
  408. Anyway, a new problem has come up. You see, I'm also the proud(more or less)
  409. owner of an Enhanced IDE controller card, and the SB just f*cks up the whole
  410. shit. When I have my SB16 inside my computer(no GUS or SCSI) the diskstation
  411. wont work. Either I get a general failure message or the install prog just
  412. hangs. I've also tried to run the installation from my HD, but it wont help.
  413. Have anybody got a mailing adress(or a digest) for the SB? The same thing
  414. happens when I'm loading the drivers for the EnhIDE card. Evyrthing just hangs.
  415.  
  416. Fortunately I have a full-30-days-money-back-warranty. I'll probably end up
  417. using that.
  418.  
  419. I've also disabled everything on the SB. Including gameport, MIDI and IDE.
  420. Maybe the problem will disappear if I buy a SB Pro or something without the
  421. IDE interface?

  472. I bought my GUS (v3.7) second hand for about 50Quid, and upgraded it to
  473. 512K with a couple of chips had lying around. I am very very pleased with
  474. it and think it sounds amazing compared with my original Sound Bastard 16
  475. (lovely name ;) ). It probably is the ideal solution, except for bying a
  476. roland insted of the GUS, but then that is much more cash. The bastard 
  477. has my CD-ROM on it so I can't get rid of it (it is the Creative Labs 
  478. CR-563B (any good plays on 'creative labs' please)). They both live quite 
  479. happily together, and the SB16 can do 16bit recording so I don't need a 
  480. better GUS.

  482. I have always had the SB on x220 and the GUS on x240 but I have played 
  483. around with all their settings and they seem to work fine with any set of 
  484. IRQs and DMAs, the setup programs both working, the only annoying things 
  485. being:
  486. 1. The GUS wipes over the Bastard's settings in config.sys.
  487. 2. The GUS will only autoinstall as the first WAVE and MIDI devices in 
  488. windows, but I deleted windows so it doesn't matter ;).
  489. I have no idea as to whether there are any revision numbers on SB's so I 
  490. dunno whether mine is newer/older than this guy's:

  500. I have the GUS 3.59 drivers and the latest SB drivers from ftp.creaf.com. 
  501. One neat trick to try is (using linux) play midi files with adagio. It is 
  502. a great program, and will use both sound cards, and then you can have

  508. Now for a problem. I want to use the combo to play Ultima Underworld 2,
  509. and they both will be detected Ok in setup, with the SB16 being an SBPro
  510. and the GUS being GM using MegaEm. I want to have stereo effects, and The
  511. GUS doing the music (which was even quite good on the SB but nothing
  512. compared to the GUS). I can only ever get the GUS working for music.
  513. Nothing else EVER works. Please can someone tell me how to get them all
  514. working together.
